When did you start writing and why?
I have been writing stories for as long as I can remember. And I write not because I want to but because I have to. It is the most satisfying and entertaining thing that I have ever done. I always wanted to be a writer, but everyone told me to choose a more sensible profession because my chances of success as a writer were slim to none. When I was in fourth grade, I wrote a story that was twenty handwritten pages long about a girl and her horse. That’s a pretty good sized story for a kid. The elementary school librarian asked to read it. I’m sure that it was horrible, but she said that she loved it and that I needed to keep at it. I continued to write as a hobby, filling up my closet with notebooks and scribbles. Later, I went through a “dark” period in my life of about ten years where I never read one book or wrote one word. That all changed when the Twilight series came out. I was bored out of my mind one weekend and grabbed the first book that I found at the store. I was so engrossed that I went out and bought the others then read them all over a 4 day span. When I finished the series, I was overcome with the powerful need to write my own stories. I realized then that reading and writing were very important to who I am and that maybe those ten years wouldn’t have been so dark if I had been reading and writing. That was when I decided to become a serious writer. I joined the Romance Writers of America that week, looked up the local chapter, and it’s been balls–to-the-wall ever since.
What do you like best about writing?
I have a keen eye for detail and a very vivid imagination. I can spend hours daydreaming about conversations between non-existent people and the world they live in. Writing allows me to put those daydreams on paper. I’m also a control freak (those of you who know me already know this) and I love that I can control and design every aspect of my fictional characters and their world.
If you could go on a writing retreat, where would you go and for how long?
My ideal writing retreat would be a mountain cabin near a river or lake where there is nothing but fresh air and quiet. Of course, I would need internet and electricity. Room service would be nice, too. Given those elements, I could stay there indefinitely. If you know of anywhere like that, let me know!

Jeana You early writing life impresses me. 20 hand written pages! (sigh) the good old days.

Those imaginations of ours! They also lead us right into trouble. Or is that just me?

I don’t dare write anything by hand; my handwriting is awful. I do jot notes constantly and half the time I can’t figure out what I scribbled down because I was in a hurry

Being able to daydream all day about characters, events and conversations is part of the benefit of being a writer! 😀

I, too, was encouraged by teachers – who were very forgiving of early efforts, I’m sure!
